FIPA was established in 1987 aiming at representing and defending the interests of the Portuguese Agro-Food Industries in Portugal and within the European Union. In order to accomplish its tasks, FIPA analyses and holds position on the normative and legislative amendments that affect the food sector, in particular food legislation and carries out actions in order to inform and to divulge subjects of interest to the sector.

FIPA activity is centred on the promotion of dialogue with its members by holding working group meetings with the associated members, which lead to positions taken by FIPA, which are later transmitted to the European Confederation of Agro-Food Industries and to the National and European Public Administration.

The members of the Federation are associations of industrial companies. The Federation has an Advisory Council, in which are represented the fourteen leading companies and discuss the major strategic guidelines of the sector.
